Hello! My name is Becky Buschman, and I'm delighted to be part of the educational team at Greenwood Elementary School. I believe that learning is one of the greatest pleasures we have in life, and I love sharing my passion for exploring the world of knowledge with my students. In my classroom, we use the Reading Workshop model to teach students to become skillful, thoughtful readers as they work with self-selected books at their “just right” reading level. Through strategy mini-lessons, small-group work, and one-on-one coaching, the students become confident, eager readers who think and make connections as they read. This method connects well with Writing Workshop, as both techniques individualize learning, making it more meaningful and motivating to the children.

While the focus of my classroom is academic excellence, I believe that children need to feel secure in order to perform academically. Therefore, I also nurture each child’s emotional and social development. The students learn how to treat one another with the utmost respect while tackling academic challenges together; because they feel safe, they are willing to take risks academically and express their opinions with confidence. I take my role as a mentor very seriously, and strive to help each child reach his or her full potential in all areas of learning, including social development.

Just in case you’re interested in learning a little bit more about me personally, I moved to Seattle with my husband in 1986 after graduating from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia with a degree in Philosophy. I earned my Elementary Education Certification from UW in 1990 and my Masters of Instructional Technology from City U. in 2000. This is my 20th year in the teaching profession. When I'm not at school, I enjoy traveling, reading, hiking, cross-country skiing, and live music.
