Recently two classrooms from Greenwood Elementary planted 100 native evergreens, including Douglas Fir, Western Red Cedar, and Hemlock. Jamey Schmidt’s 3rd and 4th grade class and their buddies in Susan Wilson’s 1st grade class were able to volunteer with the Green Seattle Partnership to re-forest one of our Seattle parks. This was especially fun when we learned we could name the plot after our school. It is located outside the dog park fence near the NE corner.
The students had an informative session with a Seattle Parks Department Naturalist to learn more about evergreen trees and how important they are to our city environment. Then, they planted trees. They all were very excited to know that they are not only helping our community, but now they can watch their own tree grow. Someday they will be able to take their own children to see how the tree has grown over a generation. Next year, we hope to be involved with preparing a new planting area by cleaning out the invasive plants in the fall and then planting more evergreens in the winter. This activity was made possible for us through our partnership with Carkeek Park. A big thanks to Seattle Parks Department for giving us this opportunity.
