Volunteering
at Greenwood Elementary-Room Parents
What
is a Room Parent?
The Greenwood
Elementary PTA helps establish a network of Room Parents for each classroom
to help with classroom communication, recruit volunteers, and support
the work of teachers. Room Parents are link between the classroom and
the PTA and a link betwen the classroom and the volunteer coordinator.
How
a Room Parent can help the classroom teacher
- Maintain a list of families
in the classroom: email addresses, phone numbers, and volunteer availability
- Write and
distribute classroom news: photos, field trip announcements, special
assignments, parties
- Recruit and
schedule volunteers
- Help teachers with grant
requests from the PTA
- Coordinate
food drives, teacher appreciation, parties
How
a Room Parent can support the PTA
- Promote PTA membership,
meetings and events via the classroom news
- Help teachers
with PTA fundraising events (Jog-a-Thon, auction art)
- Identify
projects and present ideas to the PTA that will help the classroom
How
a Room Parent can support the Volunteer Coordinator
- Identify and recruit volunteers
for PTA events
- Spread the
word about volunteer needs via the classroom news
A room parent has excellent
rapport with the classroom teacher, time during the school day to spend
in the classroom, basic computer skills and likes to meet and talk to
people. The PTA will help match interested people with teacher; teachers
